James Henry Maiden, Age 32

Private, 13864, 8th Battalion, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

James was another son of Dawley having been born there before moving at some point to Rotherham where he worked as a miner before enlisting into the KOYLI.

I have been unable to prove if he was in any way related to the other Maiden lads already mentioned but he could well have been their cousin.

James was killed in action on the First day of the battle of the Somme, the British armies’ blackest day.

James lies buried at Authuvile in the Lonsdale cemetery in grave IV.A.8

James’s parents were George Edwin Maiden and Susanna Maiden (Bailey), they were living at Dawley Road in 1881, James was Baptised on the 16th Apr 1884 at Malinslee, by 1888 the family had moved to Rawmarsh, Yorkshire, in 1907 James married Milly Biddleston, and in 1911 they were living at 10 Lindley Street, Rotherham, Yorkshire, when James died in 1916 he left a wife and three children, James William born 05/03/1908, Harold born 12/05/1911, and Phillis born 25/09/1913.
